Automotive Engine

The first auto engine was not designed for automobiles at all. Alphonse Beau de Rochas cam up with the design of the 4-step combustion engine in 1862. In 1876, Otto finalized the now famous Otto cycle. This was a significant improvement over steam engines. Steam powered carriages were the base for all automotive engines of those times. Once the internal combustion engine was perfected, people started mating the engine with bicycles and horse carriages. That is how the first auto engine was created. Daimler came up with the first 2 stroke combustion engine in 1885 and the first four stroke engine for automobiles in 1889.

By 1901, the first car to be manufactured in thousands had been introduced. The Curved Dash Oldsmobile became a reality only because the compact and efficient automotive engine had been perfected. Auto engines were a complicated mix of parts and devices that controlled inflow of air and fuel and the exhaust of the smoke from the engine. The V shaped cylinder was invented and this enabled automotive engine manufacturers to pack in a bigger punch in a small engine.

Ford's assembly line made changes to the way the engine was assembled and fitted. However, the basic design of the engine remained the same. The battery was fitted to automobiles to power the electrical lighting system of the automobile. Soon, the battery and the engine were interlinked. The first spark to ignite the fuel when the car was started was supplied by the battery. The engine in turn kept the battery charged and enabled the internal electrical components to function for a long time without discharging the battery.

The air filter controlled the inflow of air and the carburetor supplied fuel into the cylinder. For a very long time, the basic functioning of the car engine remained the same. The post 70's period saw a spurt in auto engine manufacture. This was caused by a combination of factors like the fuel price spike, increase in awareness about environmental pollution and invention of newer materials that made cars lighter, stronger and more efficient.

The carburetor was modified and fuel inflow was controlled by a computer chip. The engine was modified and multiple valves to introduce fuel and air in the engine were fitted. The ratio of air to fuel in the automobile was calculated with precision to the last decimal. This combined with the right level of compression of the fuel and the air ensured that maximum pressure was generated in the engine.

The connection between the valves and the crankshaft was worked on to ensure the valves, which controlled the internal functioning of the engine, worked in synch with the rotation of the pistons, which was controlled by the crankshaft. Today, auto engines have become smarter, efficient and more powerful. Aluminum is used to ensure the cylinders and the pistons withstand heat better. Coolant is used to ensure the engine cools down faster and better.Today, you can buy all engine related parts, from engines to coolant and valves online.
